Event Details:

Alana Marshall’s passion for everything biblio-related led her to begin writing her blog The Library Within – and she’s coming to Nedlands Library for three free workshops in March to talk about using books as therapy.

Her blog has served as an expression of her enchantment with literature, libraries, lifelong learning and the engagement provided by the insight and words of others.

The first workshop is 10.30am-11.30am, March 6, focusing on “bibliotherapy” or healing the soul through literature.

From the first libraries in ancient Egypt and Greece, which were described as “temples to heal the soul”, it was understood literature had a profound effect on the heart and intellect of the reader, allowing a deeper understanding of human nature and its conditions.

This first workshop will explore the history of bibliotherapy, its applications and benefits and some methods and techniques.

Workshop two, to be held 10.30am-12pm, March 13, looks at applying bibliotherapy in daily life with participants sharing books that have had the most impact and influence on their lives.

Alana will show how books can be used to understand yourself better, detail strategies for putting reading time to best use and provide some literary recommendations for guiding a personal development journey.

The third workshop on March 20 from 10.30am-11.30am has been dubbed “the philosophy of reading”.

It will tap into techniques such as mindful reading and connecting with your inner storyteller, as well as strategies for building reading into your life as a productive and powerful habit.

Bookings essential at – only 12 spaces available for each session.

Nedlands Library is at 60-64 Stirling Highway, Nedlands.
